Discovery and mechanism divergence
MOTS-c was identified in 2015 as one of a small class of mitochondrial-derived peptides encoded in the mitochondrial genome. Preclinical research has examined its role in AMPK-related signaling, glucose homeostasis in muscle tissue, and mitochondrial biogenesis pathways. 5-Amino-1MQ is a synthetic small-molecule NNMT (nicotinamide N-methyltransferase) inhibitor developed as a research probe for the methylation-cycle’s role in adipose-tissue biology. NNMT-inhibitor studies have examined effects on cellular NAD+ salvage and adipocyte differentiation in preclinical models.
