What is bacteriostatic water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The preservative inhibits bacterial growth, which is why the vial can be punctured more than once during laboratory work.
How is it different from sterile water?
Sterile water for injection contains no preservative and is intended for single use. Bacteriostatic water is preserved, so a multi-dose vial stays usable across repeated withdrawals.
How should it be stored, and how long does it last?
Store sealed vials at controlled room temperature away from direct light. Unopened vials carry the manufacturer's printed expiry; once punctured, most laboratories discard after 28 days.
